  1. Google releases Gemini 3.7 Flash

    Google released Gemini 3.7 Flash on 13 August 2026, describing improvements to the model’s core reasoning. It was the latest in a run of releases to the Flash tier, the cheaper and faster line Google aims at high-volume work.

  2. Google DeepMind and A24 announce a filmmaking research partnership

    Google DeepMind and the film studio A24 announced a multi-project research partnership on 22 June 2026, pairing DeepMind researchers with A24 filmmakers to develop AI-assisted creative tools. Google also took a financial stake in the studio as part of the deal.

  3. Nobel chemistry prize honors AlphaFold and David Baker

    The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences gave half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper of Google DeepMind for protein structure prediction with AlphaFold, and half to David Baker of the University of Washington for computational protein design.

  4. DeepMind systems reach silver-medal standard at the IMO

    Google DeepMind said its AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 systems solved four of six problems at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad, scoring 28 of 42 points, one short of a gold medal. The systems took up to three days per problem against contestants’ 4.5 hours.

    Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs announced AlphaFold 3 on 8 May 2024, extending the protein-structure predictor to complexes of proteins with DNA, RNA, small-molecule ligands, and ions. The Nature paper reported at least a 50% accuracy gain over prior methods.

  6. Google pauses Gemini image generation of people

    Google stopped Gemini from generating images of people on 23 February 2024 after it produced racially diverse depictions of Nazi-era German soldiers and the US founding fathers. Senior vice president Prabhakar Raghavan said tuning for diversity had overgeneralized.

  7. Google launches Gemini, built to be multimodal from the start

    Google and Google DeepMind announced Gemini 1.0 on 6 December 2023 in three sizes, Ultra, Pro and Nano. Google described it as built to be multimodal from the start rather than adapted afterward, and said Ultra was the first model past human-expert performance on MMLU, at 90.0%.

  8. AI researchers and executives sign a statement on extinction risk

    The Center for AI Safety published a one-sentence statement on 30 May 2023, saying that reducing the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority beside pandemics and nuclear war. Hundreds signed, among them Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Demis Hassabis and Sam Altman.

  9. Google merges Brain and DeepMind into Google DeepMind

    Google said on 20 April 2023 that it was combining the Brain team from Google Research with DeepMind into a single unit called Google DeepMind, led by DeepMind’s co-founder and chief executive Demis Hassabis. Google said the move would accelerate its progress in AI.
