  1. OpenAI sells shares at $500 billion and converts to a PBC

    Current and former employees sold about $6.6 billion in OpenAI shares at a $500 billion valuation, Bloomberg reported on 2 October 2025. OpenAI announced its conversion to OpenAI Group PBC on 28 October, after talks with California and Delaware attorneys general.

  2. Mira Murati leaves OpenAI

    OpenAI’s chief technology officer Mira Murati said on 25 September 2024 that she was leaving after six and a half years, wanting “the time and space to do my own exploration.” Chief research officer Bob McGrew and research vice president Barret Zoph left the same week.

  3. Ilya Sutskever founds Safe Superintelligence

    Ilya Sutskever announced Safe Superintelligence Inc. on 19 June 2024, a month after leaving OpenAI, with Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. The founding statement named “one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence” and gave offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.

  4. OpenAI opens GPT-3 to developers through a private API beta

    OpenAI opened a commercial API on 11 June 2020 giving developers access to GPT-3 for what it called virtually any English language task. The private beta included about a dozen partner companies, among them Algolia, Quizlet, and Reddit.
